Many of my spare Sunday afternoons are spent flying radio-controlled models, in particular my Flair Giles 202 3D (below, right) which has a 48" wingspan and an 8.5cc glow engine. I'm a member of Leafields Model Aircraft Club in Derbyshire, who got me through my "solo" examination in September 2004. I also fly a small electric-powered J3 Cub for fun and there's a Top Flite 90-size Spitfire kit "on the bench" which will have its maiden flight just as soon as I get enough spare time to actually finish building it. Nervous times ahead, methinks! To round off my models, I recently acquired a Century Hummingbird micro helicopter (above right), which is battery-powered. The level of concentration required to even hover the thing is intense, so I'm expecting a real sense of achievment if and when I eventually manage it! Radio-flying is a very rewarding hobby and a great way to relax after a hard week's work - check out my club's site and maybe you'll be inspired to try it... |
